Dynamics of TCP in congested ATM multiplexers

چکیده
In this paper we investigate the dynamic behavior of multiplexer queues for TCP traac in simple ATM networks. Our results are based on theoretical investigations which are proved by simulations. We propose a cell based queue length evaluation for TCP traac over ATM using service c ategorie UBR. In case of cell losses at the ATM multiplexer we estimate packet loss probabilities and discuss the interaction with the TCP congestion control mechanism. We can show that in very special cases a c ertain, unlucky TCP connection is not able to transmit any data only because of bad timing.

Improved virtual queueing and dynamic EPD techniques for TCP over ATM
| It is known 14] that TCP throughput can degrade signii-cantly over UBR service in a congested ATM network, and the early packet discard (EPD) technique has been proposed to improve the performance. However, recent studies 11], 16] show that EPD cannot ensure fairness among competing VCs in a congested network, but the degree of fairness can be improved using various forms of fair buuer alloca...
متن کاملBalanced Packet Discard for Improving TCP Performance in ATM Networks
TCP suffers from low performance over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This is mainly because during phases of congestion, ATM drops cells without taking into account the effect this has on the upper layer protocols. Two main algorithms, called PPD and EPD, were proposed in the past for improving TCP performance. However, they address one aspect of the problem, that has only small eff...

متن کاملAn Analysis of the Impact of Suspending Cell Discarding in TCP-over-ATM
A cell-discard method has been developed for use in networks supporting TCP-over-ATM traffic with an unspecified bit rate. In this "concentrated cell discard" (CCD) method, when an ATM switch becomes congested, consecutive cells are discarded from the front of the buffer, and cell discarding is suspended for a specified period of time. This method prevents TCP timeouts, which are the main reaso...
متن کاملTCP Boston: A Fragmentation-Tolerant TCP Protocol for ATM Networks
We propose a new transport protocol, TCP Boston, that turns ATM's 53-byte cell-oriented switching architecture into an advantage for TCP/IP. At the core of TCP Boston is the Adaptive Information Dispersal Algorithm (AIDA), an efficient encoding technique that allows for dynamic redundancy control. AIDA makes TCP/IP's performance less sensitive to cell losses, thus ensuring a graceful degradatio...
